Reading a Shaft Spec Sheet
Flex, weight, torque, and material each shape how a shaft performs, and none of them tell the full story alone. Here's what the numbers actually mean once you're on the bench.
A Relative Label, Not a Fixed Standard
Flex ratings — Senior, Regular, Stiff, Extra Stiff — aren't standardized across manufacturers. A Stiff-labeled shaft from one brand can play noticeably softer or firmer than a Stiff-labeled shaft from another. Flex is better understood as a description of how much a shaft bends and releases relative to your own swing speed and tempo, not a fixed spec you can shop by label alone.
Too flexible for your swing speed, and face angle at impact can drift inconsistently along with excess spin. Too stiff, and feel and shaft loading both suffer.
Steel, Graphite, and Multi-Material
Steel
Heavier and more consistent shaft to shaft, giving precise feedback for players who prioritize control. Standard in irons and wedges for anyone who values feel over swing speed gains.
Graphite
Lighter weight raises swing speed for players who benefit from it and dampens vibration for a softer feel. Standard in drivers and fairway woods, increasingly common in irons for slower-swing-speed players.
Multi-Material
A steel tip section paired with a graphite body, aiming to blend feel and consistency with reduced overall weight and vibration — a growing category in iron shafts.
The Numbers Behind the Flex Label
Torque measures how much a shaft twists under load. Lower torque generally feels more stable for faster, more aggressive swings, while higher torque adds a softer release for smoother tempos.
Shaft weight interacts with flex more than most golfers expect: a lighter shaft in the same flex rating usually plays softer and generates more clubhead speed, while a heavier shaft in that same flex rating plays firmer with more control — a separate variable worth testing independent of the flex letter alone.
